An unlocked phone is a device that is not bound to any carrier or plan. It allows you to choose your phone first and your carrier second. Upon selecting a plan, simply insert the carrier's SIM card into the phone and you're ready to go. If you decide you want to change carriers down the road or want to take an international trip, it's as simple as replacing your existing SIM card with a new SIM and activating your new plan. What are the benefits of an unlocked phone? Freedom: Choose the carrier with the best service or price. If you find a better deal later, you have the ability to change to a different carrier. Travel: Take your phone internationally and use the carrier of your choice. It's as easy as inserting an active SIM card. Selection: Choose the phone with the features you want, whether or not your carrier sells it, and get more service options without a contract. How do I set up my unlocked phone? The first thing you’ll need is a SIM card for your desired carrier. When activated, the SIM card will let your phone connect to your carrier’s network. If you decide to upgrade to a newer unlocked phone in the future, you can easily remove the SIM card from your old phone and put it in your new phone—just make sure you get the right size of SIM card (nano, micro, or standard) for your phone. If you want to use your phone while traveling internationally, you can easily buy a SIM card for a carrier that operates where you’re traveling. As long as it’s activated, you can just swap SIM cards when you arrive at your destination. Its price is my favorite aspect, and I imagine other buyers were also attracted to it. This feels like very few compromises were needed to reach this price. And I know my review may seem early, but Amazon had mine shipped on Sunday, which is earlier than normal. This is the actual US variant from Amazon, not imported. 1) Performance: Z3560 + 2GB RAM + 16 ROM (~11GB free after upgrading the pre-installed ASUS apps) I have never used an Intel SoC in any smartphone so I didn't know what to expect compared to Qualcomm, Exynos, or Tegra. Honestly, it performs very well from my experiences so far despite not having 3GB+ RAM like the S6 or G4, which means you can have multiple apps open unlike the Nexus 9 where it constantly reloads everything! Also the phone doesn't have the weird lag other mid-range phones display while installing apps, so you can multitask even when apps are downloading/installing from the Play store. I'll assume this means the NAND speeds are fine but I haven't tried any I/O benchmarks yet. - Antutu = 41212 - Geek Bench 3 = 745 2287 - Android Bench = Read_154.51MB/s Write_38.48MB/s 2) Network / Signal Reception / Tether: (T-Mobile US) One problem I had with my LG G2 is that the signal performance indoors is really unreliable, and sometimes it just completely loses signal or drops down to 2G/Edge. Luckily, the ZF2 doesn't do this at all. Indoors I'm getting almost full LTE bars compared to the 1-2 bars, although the ZF2 is also receiving faster DL/UP speeds according to Speed Test (14.49Mb DL, 13.63 UP). For anyone that tethers you'll be happy to know that it works without without problems. 3) MicroSD: While other phones are moving away from card slots (like the S6 or Nexus line) the ZF2 allows you to move apps to the SD to save storage. I inserted a 64GB UHS-1 formatted as exFAT it worked right away. It's nice not to need root or fancy apps just to use a microSD card. Due to the compatibility with 64GB the slot probably supports 128GB. 4) Software / Zen UI: Asus ships it with 5.0, though after I finished the set-up I was prompted with a software update (not 5.1.x). It took about 12 minutes to upgrade. Similar to LG, Samsung, Sony, etc. Asus has given their ZF2 a custom UI on top of Lollipop. It's not the prettiest UI ever but it gets the job done, thanks to all of its features--like you can change the default theme, change the icons, organize the app drawer with groups, double-tap to wake, edit quick settings, and so on. There's just a lot of software stuff from Asus packed in, which is surprising given the price. Some of it is bloat to me and some features like "Smart Saving", "Boost" (Clears RAM), as well as the ability to tweak the display are awesome. 5) Screen: 1080P IPS Most flagships have resolutions that are UHD (sort of silly IMO but whatever) so when you look at the ZF2 don't expect the same sharpness of an S6 Edge or the color accuracy of an iPhone 6/+. At full brightness I can see that it's definitely dimmer than my G2. The ZF2 includes an app called "Splendid" (also comes with Asus Laptops) that allows you to tweak "color temperature" via a warm/cool slider and "screen color mode". Screen color mode can edit hue + saturation. 6) Hardware Design: When you check the price you must be thinking that it feels just like its price, it really doesn't. The rear keys power button both need more effort when pushed compared to the G2's (can't comment on G3's), though that power button is really in an odd spot. If it weren't for double-tap to wake I would hate that power button. And the choice of 3 physical buttons is sort of disappointing because the virtual ones can disappear in Lollipop, meaning they won't extend the size of the lower bezel. The battery cover looks like it's brushed aluminum and resembles the pattern on Vivobooks. 7) Conclusion: If you have the money I might suggest getting the 4GB version if you're crazy about multitasking (saw a video where the guy had 4+ games open! WTF) or want to future-proof (which is pointless anyway). Otherwise you'll be fine with the 2GB variant, even though other phones are shipping with 3GB RAM now. However, you have to keep in mind that phones like the G4, S6/Edge, and Nexus 6 are all more expensive and you're paying less than half of all of them for an experience that's not much worse. You have a SoC that's competitive with flagships from last year, a 5.5" FHD screen (the size of the entire phone makes my G2 feel small now), microSD, TWO SIM CARD SLOTS (only 1 can accept Data), and stock software that runs well out-of-the-box. One last thing I should mention is the temperature. I used the phone for sometime and it didn't heat-up anywhere near as much as my Nexus 4 G2 doing the same activities (web browsing on their respective stock browser app). Maybe this means the Intel CPU is efficient, or Asus knows what they're doing. Either way the backside doesn't get very hot, which is great because I hate that. Overall, I think Asus has a future in the Android market. Their 30 Millions sales estimate might fail even though the price is low, but I won't take away the credit they deserve for offering an almost premium experience into a budget device. _______________________________________________________________________________ UPDATE: Battery life, Gaming, AndroBench, Splendid, Updates and Bloatware *( I'm no camera expert, so I won't comment on it b/c I have a dedicated one ) 8) Battery Performance: Now that I've had time to use the phone fully I'll comment on how the battery lasts compared to the 3000mAh in the G2. Despite both sharing the same capacity their actual usage is significantly different. On the ZF2 there's a strange entry called "Android OS" that's draining the most battery (followed by "Screen"), and even after the most recent OTA from Asus this is still #1. Even after using the battery controls ( "power saver - Ultra-saving mode" ) I cannot prevent Android OS from being at the top. Anyway, the ZF2 gets between 3-4hrs of screen-on-time versus the 5-7hrs I was used to on my G2 ( auto brightness + LTE/HSPA + NO Auto-sync on both). My usage on both phones is very similar: browser (2-3 tabs), Feedly (news), ~20-30min of Youtube, SMS/MMS, ~1-2hrs of calling, Gmail + Exchange, and eBook/comics.. Once Asus fixes the Android OS drain updates to 5.1.x or Android M (ZF2 ships with 5.0.1 r1 or LRX21V specifically) battery should improve, but right now I'm slightly disappointed. 9) Gaming: PowerVR Blah Blah (same as iPhone 5s) These are the games I tested: (All on Max settings, or whatever was allowed cleared opened apps) A) Marvel Future Fight - A lot of lag on max settings, maybe this is due to no optimization? B) Asphalt 8 - Good, seems like it's between 25-30FPS C) Real Boxing - Plays fine, but doesn't have the "Tegra" effects D) Mortal Kombat - Works now E) Real Racing 3 - Seems okay, stutters sometimes 10) Bloatware! : A smartphone wouldn't be complete if it weren't loaded with the goods. This is most of it: Asus MyFrame, Asus MyWater, Clean Master, Chrome (there's already an Asus browser! ), Drive, Newsstand, Dr.Safety (?? ), TripAdvisor, Asus Support, Asus ZenUI (JK), Do it Later, Easy Mode, Graffiti Board, Kids Mode, Lovely Pink, Mini Movie, MyAsus, Party Link, PC Link, Photo Collage, Quick Memo, Remote Link, Share Link, SMMI_Test (?? ), Super Note, Web Storage, ZenTalk, and What's Next ( -_- ) 11) Software Updates: Today I received another OTA for the ZF2 ( 2.17.40.12 ) making it the 2nd one I've received. Sadly... the update is NOT 5.1 since it's around 100MB. Also if you go to "Settings -- ZenUI Instant Update" you can update the built-in Asus apps. Updates for Asus apps have been frequent, nothing I'd complain over. _____________________________________________________________ UPDATE: Manual vs Low-light mode in low lighting with Snake! battery life Looks like there's no need to use low-light mode because manual can be tweaked to look far better under poor conditions. Read more First, I didn't buy this phone from Amazon. Though, I am a Prime member I just found a better deal at B H when it was first released. It took a little longer but worth it. I purchase the 64 gb version in silver. I can tell you this phone is awesome for the price. I stop using my Note 3 because of this phone. *NOTE* Make sure you update the new firmware before using. Processors: Fast and reliable. Ram: WOW....I consider myself as a power users and man...the apps doesn't lag between switching. I have like 10 apps running in the background and not even once it slowed down. Calls: It's clear and good. I can hear from people and other people can hear me on the other side. UI: I like the UI and the ability to customize. It's fast and easy to use (you can download it from the PlayStore). I dreaded Samsung TouchWiz so bad I had to replace it on ALL MY SAMSUNG! Performance: Pretty impressive for a $300 phone. I was able to installed Kodi and ran it without problem. SDcard works great and fast ~27 mbps for a 1.72 gb file so roughly 1 mins and 23 seconds. Battery: Even though it's not removable. I still get good amount of time on it (see attached photo). Most people complain about the battery life. Just an FYI...it's not the phone it's Android Lolipop 5.0. Google has made it very clear that 5.0 has a memory and ram leak issue. All has been fix in 5.1 so be patience with it. Camera: It's fast and autofocus is great! Better than my Note 3 but not as AWESOME as my wife Note 4 but hey I paid less than half the price. I do however don't like the camera in low light setting. Even with HDR on. I still think Samsung Camera module is better but again...half the price. Network: I'm getting pretty good speed even though it says just "4G" (see attached photo) I'm on T-Mobile network and from So. Cali. I like how this phone isn't restricting as most flagship. I was able to uninstalled some apps that was useless. Bloatware wasn't incredibly massive as most providers phone so that is ALWAYS A PLUS to me! I consider myself a tech guy and expert on Android. I have Android's phone since forever. I have been a Samsung guy but since they moved to no SDCard and removable battery I look elsewhere. I found it on the Asus ZF2! So I will and have been recommending it to my friends and colleagues. Side note: Getting this phone into Recovery mode is a bit difficult for most regular user. Even I had some issue at first.
