Asus Zenfone 3 series first look: Premium pricing, but will it work? With the Asus Zenfone 3 series, which includes Zenfone 3, Zenfone 3 Deluxe and more, the emphasis is on premium Asus Zenfone 3 series, which was first announced at the annual Computex in Taiwan, is now officially available in India. And Asus has taken a big leap with the Zenfone 3 in India by going for a premium pricing that starts at Rs 18,999 and goes all the way to Rs 62,999. The priciest of the lot is the Zenfone 3 Deluxe, the world’s first phone with a Snapdragon 821 processor and 256GB storage on board. To put it in perspective, this costs more than the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Note 7, which has a Rs 59,999 price-tag for the 64GB storage version. And the Note 7 has been widely acknowledged as one of the best Android phones ever. The high-pricing is not just with the Asus Zenfone 3 Deluxe. The Zenfone 3 Deluxe’s Snapdragon 820 model with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage costs Rs 49,999, which is also the price for the phablet Zenfone 3 Ultra. The Ultra has a Snapdragon 625 processor and 4GB RAM+64GB storage. Samsung 7 cover, zc500tg. Mobile official website, 32gb 4gb ram. Model and price, phone 5. All series drivers, 3 release. Asus Zenfone 3 meanwhile comes in two SKUs: the 5.5-inch one with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage at Rs 27,999 while the 5.2-inch version has 3GB RAM, 32GB storage and a price tag of Rs 21,999. There’s also the more budget end Asus Zenfone 3 Laser, which has a Snapdragon 430 processor, 4GB RAM and 32GB storage, and costs Rs 18,999.If you look at the overall price, Asus hasn’t bothered playing in the under Rs 10,000, or even the under Rs 15,000 budget mark, and that’s a big risk to take in a market like India. In fact, the first Zenfone did really well for Asus because it was priced under Rs 10,000. Numbers from research firms continue to show that in India, budget categories are what bring in the volumes. I’ve seen these phones in Taiwan and once again in India, and there’s no denying they look premium, but whether that’s good enough to convince users is another story. There’s Zenfone 3 Deluxe which has a 2.5 D curved glass, and an overall metal and glass body, that makes it looks like a high-end product. The back has a nice matte finish, which looks very classy. The phone is quite light and slim, and easy to hold. There’s no doubt Asus has a done a world-class job with this one, at least on the design side.In contrast, Zenfone 3’s design and colour scheme reminds one of the Samsung Galaxy S7, especially the dark blue tone. The Zenfone 3 has glass on the back and the front, and Asus’ Zen circle pattern on the back, which is actually quite subtle. There’s Ultra, which has matte finish on the back and a huge 6.8-inch display. But the Ultra is not exactly easy to hold, and I found it hard to use with one-hand, given the limited time I had with this phone. All phones come with full HD display resolution. But could Asus have given the Deluxe a sharper 2K display? Given the pricing, a lot of people will be asking that question, especially since the phone’s pricing puts its in the league of the Galaxy Note 7 and above.Camera is another feature that Asus has been touting with its new PixelMaster 3.0 suite. The camera features that have been talked about on the Zenfone 3 Deluxe and Zenfone 3 Ultra are the 23 MP sensor, which has 4-axis optical stabilisation and electronic image stabilisation (EIS). This 4-axis OIS is something we saw Xiaomi first introduce in their Mi5 phone, and now Asus has taken that a step further by introducing EIS for its videos as well. The Zenfone 3 Deluxe also has a super resolution mode where it can take pictures in 92 MP by stitching together five photos for a much brighter and sharper image. The Zenfone 3 Ultra also gets the same camera as the Deluxe, although the Zenfone 3 has the 16 MP camera on the back, and Laser comes with a 13 MP camera. While Asus was quick to do video and camera comparisons with iPhone 6s Plus, how well it performs in day-to-day use can only be determined with a proper review. In the demo zone, though it was hard to tell about the camera’s capability given the harsh light. But the Zenfone 3 and Zenfone 3 Deluxe appear to be really fast clickers. Asus clearly believes in adding the extra RAM to its phone. We saw the Zenfone 2 series which had 4GB RAM versions, and the new Zenfone 3 only takes it one step ahead. With 6GB RAM and 256GB storage, Zenfone 3 Deluxe can’t fall short of either, and yes it has a slightly faster Snapdragon 821 processor on board. The 256GB storage means this is one of the highest onboard storage a phone gives, but whether you really need all that space is another question. Zenfone 3’s high end version also has 4GB RAM and 64GB space, but has the Snapdragon 625 processor, while the Ultra also has the same storage, RAM and processor. But the latter costs nearly double at Rs 49,999.On the software side, Asus is promising less bloatware with ZenUI 3.0, and better UX and interface on the phone. Bloatware on Asus phones has been a problem, and it’s one of the things that made using the Zenfone Zoom very annoying. Hopefully this won’t be the case with new phones. Asus has introduced some big battery phone options in the past like Zenfone Max. But with the Zenfone 3 series, the battery size doesn’t get a big boost and given the pricing, some will view it as a big miss even though the company is claiming that the battery will give much more than normal. Zenfone 3 Deluxe has a 3000 mAh battery, the Zenfone 3 with a 5.2-inch display has 2,680 mAh battery and the Zenfone 3 Ultra has a 4600 mAh battery, but then they also come with huge displays. Battery is a crucial aspect for many smartphone users. Given the market has 4000 mAh and 3000 mAh battery phones available at a budget price, Asus’ new phones seem pricey for the battery on board. With the Asus Zenfone 3 series, the emphasis is on premium. Even the budget-end option starts at Rs 18,999. Clearly Asus believes the research it has put on camera, display, and the kind of specifications they are offering, comes with a price tag. Whether it convinces many buyers will be a crucial question.
